Understanding Metals & Non-metals
Physical Properties Of Metals
1. Physical State: Metals are solids at room temperature with exception of mercury and gallium.2. Lustre: Metals have a shine in their pure forms.
3.Malleability: Metals can be made into thin sheet.
4.Ductility: The ability of metals to be drawn into thin wires is called Ductility.
5.Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
6.Metals have high density.
7.Metals are generally hard.
8.Metals have high melting and boiling points.
9.Sonorous: The metals produce a sound on striking a hard surface.
Physical Properties Of Non-Metals
1.Non-metals are either in solid or gaseous state with the exception of bromine which is in liquid state.
2.Non-metals do not have lustre, except iodine.
3.Non-metals are not malleable
4.Non-metals are not ductile.
5.Non-metals are poor conductors of heat.
6.Non-metals do not possess the property of hardness except carbon in the form of diamond. It is the hardest substance known which also has a high melting and boiling point.
7.Non-metals do not conduct electricity except graphite.
8.Non-metals have less density.
9.Non-metals have low melting & boiling point.
10.Non-metals are not Sonorous.
Ans-:Sodium,Potassium,Copper,Iron,Gold,etc.
Q.Give any five examples of non-metals?
Ans-:Hydrogen,Nitrogen,Neon,Oxygen,Carbon,etc.
Q.Give any five examples of metalloids?
Ans-:Germanium,Antimony,Arsenic,Silicon,Boron,etc.
Q.Gold and Silver are used to make jewellery?
Ans-:1.Gold and Silver are lustorous in nature
2.They are noble metals and they are malleable and ductile
3.Gold and Silver do not react with acid, air, moisture and water at all.
4. Therefore,Gold and Silver are used to make jewellery.

1.Gold and silver are highly inactive metals.therefore, they do not undergo corrosion due to attack by moisture and atmospheric gases.
ReplyDelete2. Gold and silver are very shiny metals(lustrous).
3. they are used to make jewellery because of its bright shiny surface and high resistance to corrosion.
